Ian Firth

Creative, imaginative and innovative engineering solutions.

A structural engineering consultant with over 38 years' experience in the design, assessment and structural investigation of a wide variety of bridges and other structures.

Passionate about the vital importance of long lasting high quality design in the built environment, Ian chose to emphasise this in his inauguration as President of the Institution of Structural Engineers in 2017 and in his presentation at TED 2018. His focus is on conceiving and delivering the right solution to fit the context and creating something of lasting value and delight.

"Through my work with COWI (previously Flint & Neill), and in collaboration with many architects and other design professionals, I have been fortunate to work on the structural design of several notable bridges and structures in the UK and internationally."

Ian is a regular speaker on the subject of bridge design and lectures at several universities. He is also Trustee of Bridges to Prosperity, the charity that works towards eradicating poverty caused by rural isolation by building footbridges over impassable rivers among some of the world's poorest, remote communities. "This is life-saving and livelihood-transforming engineering at its most impactful, and it is such a privilege to be a part of this vital work."
